You have several options if you’re in your second trimester of pregnancy. You can choose a surgical abortion, parenting, or adoption.

You may feel especially anxious about deciding when you’re further along. This is understandable. You can still get the information you need to make a thoughtful decision.

Abortion

Your second trimester of pregnancy begins at around 14 weeks gestation, so medical abortion is not an option. This abortion method is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.

A surgical abortion, the most common procedure being D & E (dilation and evacuation), is performed during the second trimester and beyond. D & E is usually done with vacuum aspiration and is performed in a clinic or hospital.

You’ll experience vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping from this procedure, and you will typically feel discomfort and pain afterward.

Risks (the chances that something may affect your health) are rare, but they can happen. Surgical abortion-related risks include:

  • Uterine perforation (a hole is poked in the wall of the uterus)
  • Cervical damage
  • Infection
  • Moderate to severe bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion
  • Possible mental health effects (i.e., depression, regret) that depend on the woman and her situation

Heart to Heart Pregnancy Resource Clinic will discuss abortion with you and provide nonjudgmental information.

Parenting

Parenting is a big commitment. It can be rewarding and have certain challenges.

It’s important to consider the concerns you may have about parenting and what resources you need to succeed. Sometimes, what initially seems impossible can become a reality with the proper support.

Heart to Heart Pregnancy Resource Clinic provides parenting information, classes, and resources to help you feel prepared if you select this option. We are here to help you walk through your choices and understand the rewards and challenges of your unique situation.

We want you to have all the support you need to consider your pregnancy options.

Adoption

Adoption is a big decision. You’ve likely heard of the stigma associated with this option. Rest assured that much has changed about adoption.

You are in total control as the birth mother. You can select an adoption plan that works best for you. Open, semi-open, and closed adoption plans provide different levels of communication and privacy.

You won’t pay for adoption services and may be entitled to financial support to assist with medical care, housing, etc.

Adoption is all about supporting you, and no one will judge or shame you for making this choice. This is an act of love and sacrifice.

Heart to Heart Pregnancy Resource Clinic offers adoption information and referrals to adoption resources and agencies.

No one will pressure you to choose this option, nor should you be influenced to consider a specific adoption plan. This is entirely your decision.
