Abortion Procedures

An abortion is the termination of a viable pregnancy either with drugs (medical abortion) or a surgical procedure (surgical abortion). Both end a pregnancy but with differing methods. Abortion also comes with risks specific to the procedure you choose.

Medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, commonly uses two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. While the first drug ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone, the second drug triggers uterine contractions. The contractions will expel the embryo and pregnancy tissue with cramping and vaginal bleeding.

Surgical abortion terminates a pregnancy with a combination of dilation, suction, and tools. There are many kinds, such as vacuum aspiration, dilation & curettage (D&C), and dilation & evacuation (D&E). This type of abortion is typically performed in an abortion clinic or hospital.
