What to Know About Abortion Pill Reversal?
Taking the first drug in a medical abortion, mifepristone, can lead to second thoughts. If you’re experiencing regret and wondering if there’s still a way to continue your pregnancy, you’re not alone. A protocol called Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) may be able to help. However, timing is critical.
Heart to Heart offers no-cost referrals and information to those who want to begin APR. Contact a nurse at Heart to Heart at (307) 745-3444.

A medical abortion typically involves two drugs taken at different times:
The APR protocol involves administering progesterone under medical supervision in an effort to counteract the effects of mifepristone and support the pregnancy’s continuation.
APR depends greatly on how quickly care begins. Starting progesterone within 24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone is associated with higher rates of success, although results vary and cannot be guaranteed. In some cases, attempts have been made up to 72 hours after the first pill and even later, but it’s critical to start right away.
Once misoprostol has been taken, APR is not considered effective.
Progesterone has been used in pregnancy care for more than 50 years, including for women at risk of miscarriage.
Research examining its use for APR has not shown an increased risk of birth defects, and some studies have reported pregnancy continuation in roughly two-thirds of cases when treatment begins early.
