Learn more in our blog post: Can You Reverse the Effects of the Abortion Pill? We offer free services for women facing unexpected pregnancies.

If you’ve taken the first abortion drug, mifepristone, and are now feeling unsure, you may be wondering if it’s too late to continue the pregnancy. The good news is that it may still be possible to reverse the effects of mifepristone. This process is known as Abortion Pill Reversal (APR), and it has helped many women who experienced regret.

Heart to Heart provides no-cost, confidential APR referrals to help you get the care and answers you need. Keep reading to learn more about how this protocol works.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

First, it’s crucial to learn how the abortion pill ends a pregnancy. This process involves two drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a natural hormone your body produces to sustain the pregnancy. Without progesterone, the uterine lining thins and the pregnancy ends.

The second drug, misoprostol, is taken afterward. It causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through the vagina. Once misoprostol has been taken, the process cannot be reversed.

What Is Abortion Pill Reversal (APR)?

APR works by providing extra progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone. This hormone has been safely used for decades to support women during early pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage.

APR has been successful in many cases when started as soon as possible—ideally within 24 to 48 hours. One study reported success rates between 64 and 68%. Although not guaranteed, APR offers a real chance to continue your pregnancy.

Is It Safe?

Progesterone has a long track record and is not known to increase the risk of birth defects beyond what’s observed in the general population.

If you’ve taken mifepristone but are now feeling uncertain, it is critical to act quickly and speak with a medical professional who prescribes APR.
